R-410A Transition 2025: Homeowner Refrigerant Guide
R-410A phase down is reshaping how new air conditioners and heat pumps are built and sold. Lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-32 and R-454B are replacing R-410A in new equipment starting in 2025.
We explain what stays the same for your existing system, what changes for new installs, and how to make a smooth plan.
Manufacturers are pivoting to lower-GWP refrigerants to meet climate rules. In North America, new residential systems are shifting away from R-410A toward A2L options like R-32 and R-454B. This transition reflects updated codes and product lines prepared for 2025.

A2L refrigerants in plain language
ASHRAE classifies refrigerants by toxicity and flammability. A2L means lower toxicity with mild flammability and strict charge limits that keep concentrations well below ignition thresholds in normal spaces. These refrigerants are engineered for safe use in properly designed and installed systems.
Can I keep my existing R-410A system?
Yes. You can continue to use and service an R-410A system through its normal life. Components for R-410A units can still be made and imported for repairs, labelled for servicing existing equipment only. You are not forced to replace a working system just because of the phase down.
Are drop-in replacements a thing?
No. R-454B and R-32 are not drop-in substitutes for R-410A. New refrigerants require equipment designed for them, with controls, components, and safety features built into the system. We do not retrofit an R-410A unit with an A2L refrigerant.
What this means for a new install
If your next system is purchased in 2025 or later, it will likely ship with R-454B or R-32. The installer follows updated standards, uses A2L-rated handling practices, and commissions the system to the manufacturer’s specs.
The outcome you feel is familiar: reliable cooling and heating, but with a lower environmental footprint.
Where codes stand in Canada
Provinces are adopting the 2023 edition of CSA B52, which permits the use of A2L refrigerants when installed to code.
Technical Safety BC has announced adoption, and Ontario has confirmed alignment through its 2024 OBC referencing CSA B52:23. This creates a clear path for compliant A2L installations.
How we plan your transition
We start with a free on-site assessment and a clear quote. We match equipment to your home, confirm line-set suitability, and select an indoor coil that pairs correctly with the outdoor unit.
We pressure test, evacuate to target microns, weigh in the charge, and document start-up results. We register manufacturer warranties and provide a simple owner handover so you know how to run the system from day one.
Service and parts reality
R-410A supply will continue for service work. Prices may move with market availability, but you will be able to repair leaks, replace coils, or swap components on existing systems.
We advise repair first when the unit has meaningful life left, and replacement when the economics and reliability line up.
R-32 vs R-454B: what to know
Both meet low-GWP goals and are widely supported by manufacturers. Performance and efficiency can vary by model.
The practical difference for you is simple: choose a matched system from a reputable brand, installed to code by a team trained on A2L handling. We guide you through that choice and support it after install.
What to ask before you buy
- Do you install A2L-charged systems and follow current code?
- Is the equipment matched and listed as a complete system?
- Will you provide commissioning readings and a model-serial list?
- How will you manage permits and inspections?
- What is the parts warranty and what does the labour warranty cover?
Why choose us for your refrigerant transition
We design, install, and commission new systems that meet today’s refrigerant standards, and we service existing R-410A equipment with clear guidance on repair versus replace.

Static Pressure 101: Improve Airflow, Comfort, Efficiency
High static pressure chokes airflow, creates uneven room temperatures, and drives up energy use. We explain what static pressure is, how we test it, and how right-sized ductwork and balancing restore comfort and efficiency without guesswork.

Heat Pump Readiness: Electrical, Ducts, and Controls
Thinking about a heat pump? We outline a practical pre-install checklist that covers CSA F280 load calculations, duct capacity, electrical considerations, controls, and when to choose cold-climate or dual fuel setups for reliable year-round comfort.
